Super Typhoon Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Massive Evacuations Reported

The island nation was severely impacted by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the massive storm caused extensive flash flooding, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of millions of residents nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews documented floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people stranded on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident also called in panic, saying the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual killed after her home gave way on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon was downgraded to a severe tropical storm early Monday as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

Per meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, but gusts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is expected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly thousands of shelters were activated to accommodate tens of thousands of households.

Recent Context and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit shortly following another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives and left another 135 missing before moving on toward Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Searches for those still missing had to be suspended recently due to safety concerns to emergency personnel.

The climate crisis is causing cyclones stronger and frequent. This typhoon marks the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events result in approximately millions in dollars in damage for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader issued a state of emergency on Thursday because of the extensive devastation from Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
