RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of access tunnels down to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - also known as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their courage," he added. "They were among a great many British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces executed what it called a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
